IT'S NICE TO KNOW I'M NOT A COMPLETE FAILURE AS A MOTHER

Usually, when people meet Baker for the first time, they make one of the following comments:

"Baker is a stud."

"That kid is a rock star."

"Check him out. He is the cutest."

Or, (my personal favorite), "Your son is freakin' hilarious."

All of these quotes have been said by different people. All are equally true. But, after you get to know Baker a little better, the comments change a bit.

"Baker is the sweetest boy I know."

"He is so gentle and kind."

"How did you get him to be so laid-back?"

But, no matter what your take on him may be everyone seems to agree that he is pretty special.

Even though he may (at times) be a handful, even though the potty-training is spotty at best, even though as I sit here typing this he is getting out of bed for about the tenth time, even though he tests my limits (and wins) every day, he just melts my heart.

Some of you know that I get migraines fairly regularly. They are pretty well controlled by medication and usually are not that big of a deal. Take some Tylenol and lay on the couch for half an hour and I'm fine. But, every once in a while, I get hit with one pretty hard. Today was one of those days. I was so sick and in so much pain, I could barely move or even open my eyes. Of course, for a mother of three young children, crawling into bed and pulling the covers over your head is not an option. But, calling your husband at work and crying on the phone is. Baker walked into my room as I was sitting on my bed, doing just that. He stood at the foot of the bed and just watched me, silently. As soon as I hung up the phone, he crawled into my lap, wrapped his arms around my neck, and started crying. I asked him what he was crying about and through his tears he replied, "I don't know."

We sat together like that, hugging and crying, for about ten minutes. When I stood up to go make the kid's lunch, he looked up at me with a tear stained face and asked, "Does that make you happy, Mommy?"

And, you know what? It really, really does.

(Plus, he has awesome hair.)

I personally don't think it's fair that you get three awesome kids. I mean, Lauren is the most grown up little girl I've ever known. And she's beyond funny. Then Baker grows into this sweet, sensitive, and also hilarious little guy. I know I didn't get the chance to get to know Cameron very well, but I'm thinking she's destined for greatness, too (plus she's beyond cute).

I'd cry foul, but maybe it's not just chance ... maybe through genetics and proper care and nourishmen, you've created these amazing kiddos.

Even so, I'm sowing sour grapes.

You just can't beat the wonderful empathy of little kids. I hope Baker is always that forward with his love and comfort.
