IT WAS LIKE "ICE CASTLES", EXCEPT WITHOUT THE GOING BLIND PART

Okay, so it really wasn't like Ice Castles at all...

Every year our stake rents out the local ice skating rink (read: ice rink with a giant canvas tent on top so it's colder inside than outside). It is a great activity and lots of fun. Here we are at it last year. Please note how tiny my son is. Also, although not shown in this photo, my daughter was unable to skate at all and my husband first carried her and then pushed her around the ice in the stroller. So, yes it was fun last year, but it really wasn't fun. You know what I mean.

My, how things have changed.
Here we are after the activity tonight (with our good friend whom I will call the "Preferred Mother" since my daughter likes her more than me. And, yes, I am totally okay with this).
Notice how huge my son is (and not really that happy to be there). But, most important, notice how much my daughter is loving it, how much the skates actually fit her this time, and how much she is standing on the ice all by herself (practically). They have those awesome things made out of PVC piping for little kids to hold onto and push around the ice. They pretty much look like old lady walkers and it is a sight to behold. (And yes, they let you take your strollers out, too which is the greatest thing that ever happened because it not only includes the babies in the activity but it gives the parents something to hold onto as well). Anyway, my daughter went nuts for ice skating this year. She never wanted to stop and my husband and all our adult friends took turns pushing her around the ice. By the end of the activity, she was going around the rink several times without falling down and even learned how to stop by turning sideways. Basically, my three year old is now a better skater than me. This face says it all:
And, you gotta love the cute little girl with the blonde curly hair, blue eyes, and hockey helmet. If that just isn't her personality in a nutshell, I don't know what is....

Those are such cute pictures! Do they give out the hockey helmets, or is that yours?

I guess if Chef had anything to do with it, you own that thing.

...and I'm glad that no one went blind...

This is me said...

Sarita: They actually lent us the hockey helmet. Also, she was wearing kids hockey skates instead of the cheap-o, bright blue plastic numbers all the rest of us had to wear.

She looked pretty sweet.

Sarita's right, she may need a hockey helmet of her very own. Not just for skating, but imagine the uses in everyday life...

jumping on the bed, sledding, head-butting, breakdancing (the head-spin)... and let's face it, she's not all that coordinated; the hockey helmet would help with those head-to-wall, face-to-table, etc. incidents.

Just a thought. Skating was fun though.

I was just thinking how my 3 year old would do at ice skating and along comes this post. I might have to look into the local arena.

I LOVE that pvc pipe thingey. What a great idea!

My oldest has gone roller skating a couple of times, and they allow strollers on the rink, but they also allow the kids to take their scooters out there. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
