Do you guys get the channel Boomerang? It is by the Cartoon Network and it is on the upper level channels (yes, we pay ridiculous amounts of money for cable).
This channel is AWESOME. It has all the old-school cartoons that we grew up watching before some idiot decided that children should only watch educational TV. It has the Smurfs, and the Jetsons, and the Flintstones, and all the Hanna Barbara and Super Hero stuff we loved as kids.
Seriously.
This week, after attempting to gouge my own eyes out while watching yet another episode of anything on Playhouse Disney or Nick Jr, I'd decided we had had enough. So, I started DVRing (yes, it's a verb) some of the cartoons on Boomerang.
My kids have spent the week watching the Flintstones and the Jetsons. They have decided that the Jetsons are better, which I just don't get because EVERYONE knows that the Flintstones are way better than the Jetsons.
Kids these days.
And, you may be like all the so-called "parenting experts" out there and have a problem with the fact that these shows have absolutely no educational value whatsoever. But, you know what, they aren't annoying either.
And that is saying a lot.
They are super entertaining, though. My kids think they are hilarious (which they are) and no one is asking them to find a shape/color/letter/animal while they are watching.
Because, who decided that watching TV had to be work? Whatever happened to watching it because it is fun and relaxing? Because if there is anything at all in this world that our children need to learn how to do, it is to relax. To stop trying to be the smartest and best and to leave behind all the pressure to meet someone else's expectations and just hang out in front of the TV doing absolutely nothing for awhile. I mean, can you imagine?! Yes, you can, because that is how you grew up and you turned out perfectly normal. Maybe great, even. I don't know, maybe you graduated at the top of your class and got a scholarship to an Ivy League school and now you have a PhD and make millions of dollars, and, you know what, you watched crappy, non-educational TV as a kid. And nobody thought twice about it or made your mom feel guilty for it or judged your intelligence because of it.
So, turn off Dora the Explorer or Little Einsteins or, heaven help us, Special Agent Oso (but not Sesame Street because that one still rocks) and go order the Boomerang channel or find the old school cartoons on You Tube. You will be doing your kids a favor.
By the way, Lauren made the following awesome comment the other day: "So, the Flintstones is like the past and the Jetsons is about the future, right?" Right.
See, she is learning History and Science. Who says these shows aren't educational?

HaHaHa....you make me laugh, and I totally agree with you. Cartoons were so much better when we were growing up! Do you remember watching the Smurfs? I wanted to be Smurfette so bad, I thought she was just beautiful. How about My Little Pony...that one rocked my world!!
Wow!! I totally have to agree with you and I don't even have kidos yet. The cartoons these days are just plain lame. Seriously the old school stuff was funny.
Ha Ha! So true! Now I wish I had the Boomerang channel because I loved all those shows!
What a good mom you are to let your kids do nothing.
I've already introduced my 3 year old to She-Ra, Animaniacs and Duck Tales. He has the theme songs memorized and sings them all the time.
OMG! This is yet another example of how you and I are totally the same. Ok, so last week, I discovered that Bommerang plays these cartoons and I started DVRing them for my kids too. Sad though, because my kids don't really like the Smurfs, but they LOVE The flintstones and the Jetsons. Oh, and Ditto to what you said about cartoons. They are so annoying these days (except Charlie and Lola...I love that one) Abbie discovered this new show called the Fresh Beat Band. Have you heard of it? It is awful!!! Talk about wanting to gouge your eyes out. We're sticking with Boomerang too. Love you!
Does Boomerang have Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, Rocky and Sylvester, and Clutch Cargo? I used to get up on Saturday mornings to these . . . and what about Underdog? "Underdog, Shoeshine Boy’s heroic alter-ego, appeared whenever love interest Sweet Polly Purebred was being victimized by such villains as Simon Bar Sinister or Riff Raff. Underdog always speaks in rhymes, such as, 'There’s no need to fear, Underdog is here!'" (From Wikipedia) Sigh. Oh man! :-)
