I think it is so fun when your kids finally catch on to different holidays. It usually happens around age 3 for Christmas and I think this is the first holiday they actually "get." Lauren and Baker really loved their birthdays at age 4 and the other, lesser holidays start to sink into their brains sometime after that.
Well, today Baker finally understood the significance of April 1st.
Sort of.
I think he played an April Fools joke on me no less than nine times today. Notice I said "joke" in the singular and not the plural "jokes."
It went a little something like this:
Baker: "Mom! Look out! You have a giant spider on your head!"
...........Wait for it..........
"April Fool's!"
Followed by gales of laughter (his, not mine).
Actually, I thought it was pretty funny the first time or two and then after that it got a little stale. But the part that killed me was that he genuinely thought I was falling for it every time.
At dinner, Brian told him that some Storm Troopers were in the neighborhood looking for him. You should have seen Baker's eyes. He was absolutely dumbfounded and begged Brian not to tell them where he was. After a second or two, his look changed to one of doubt and skepticism and he looked up at his father and said, "Dad, are you April's Fool-ing me?"
It was one of those seemingly simple, ordinary moments that made an awesome memory. So, thanks, April 1st for being a nonsense holiday that just took on a whole new meaning.

I can hear Baker's little voice saying "are you Aprils fooling me?" He is so cute.
