HOW TO GET A FIVE YEAR OLD SUPER EXCITED ABOUT POLITICS

On Tuesday morning, Brian called me from work and suggested that I put the inauguration on and let the kids watch it. They were in the middle of cartoons at the time, so I knew that this would not go over well. Lauren kind of got into the whole voting thing (she thought Brian and I should each vote for different people so it would be fair and no one's feelings would get hurt) and asked us lots about it back in November, so I thought maybe she would get a kick out of this.

I was wrong.

They did like seeing the Obama's daughters and asked several questions about them. I told them those little girls got to live in the White House, which we have taken a tour of. Lauren remembered all about it and grew concerned that the girls would get lost inside the house. That would actually be completely possible, except there's a guard standing about every two feet, so I assured her that the president's daughters would be well looked after.

I left the TV on NBC the whole morning. They didn't pay any attention to it.

That afternoon, I picked Lauren up from school and we ran some errands ending at my in-law's house. We walked into the living room and saw that they, too, had the TV on and were watching the news coverage. Lauren turned to me and said, "Is this show still on?!"

That night at dinner, we talked a little bit more about it and Brian asked Lauren if she knew why this inauguration was so important to our country. She rolled her eyes and replied, "Yeah, because it was really long."

I watched it too. Lauren is right, it was long. (not the actual inauguration, just the all day watching the Obama's every move TV coverage.)

I have to admit, my reasons for watching it were about 20% for the history and 80% to see what everyone was wearing.

I am immature and superficial, I know.

She probably would have enjoyed it more if it had been the McCain innauguration.

I could tell I watched every minute, when on Saturday, my three year old was watching tv with me and said "that is Obama and that is Michelle Obama". IT is hilarious.
